The Buffet
My wife and I spend most of our date nights eating out, we love it, we get to enjoy great food and have quality conversations at the same time. Recently, we went to an all you can eat restaurant where majority of their menu is deep-fried. We were excited and couldn't wait for our food to arrive. The deep -fried options were our favorite and the crispy chicken was repeatedly ordered. We ate as much as we wanted until we got full. For a moment, we were happy and satisfied but when all the cholesterol kicked in, we felt sick. Feeling guilty from what we ate, we regretted everything and learned our lesson.
There is a huge gap from being full and being completely satisfied. When
we are hungry and choose to eat potato chips, we become full and our appetite
for real food is gone. Why go for the imitation lobster roll when someone is
offering you the real one!
The world has been spoon-feeding us with junk and we welcome it with
open mouths. A sinful lifestyle has become the norm. Sexual immorality is
practiced and there is no more conviction. The ways of the world has taken over
us and intimacy with the Lord is gone. Our hunger has been filled with what the
world offers that when it's time for God to offer us anything, we instantly
refuse. We are full of complacency and there is no longer room for the great.
We choose to watch TV series while our marriages are slowly dying. We
lost living with integrity, not following traffic rules and accepts cheating on
business practices. Respect for authority is lost and honoring people has
become a lost art. It is sad to think that we are happy living this way but in
reality missing out on authentic abundance.
So, instead of lining up for the unhealthy buffet, go for the premium buffet where quality food and deluxe
service is available 24/7. When one tries to lose weight and desires to live a
healthy lifestyle, that person starts by making the right choices for food. Just
like our physical bodies need proper nutrients and exercise, our spiritual
bodies need those too. Choose love over judgment. Choose obedience rather than
rebellion. Choose intentionality and proactivity over passivity. Choose
pursuing God rather than the world. Ultimately, desire God rather than desiring
the world.
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.”Psalm 73:25
“Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:15-17
John Piper said it perfectly:
“The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. It is not the X-rated video, but the prime-time dribble of triviality we drink in every night.”
